Lecturer=== Dean Winkler Post Perfect, Inc. ==Course Description=== This course is designed to give computer graphics professionals a thorough understanding of the theory and practical application of video technology. It will be broken down into four parts as follows: Part I: Video Theory. This will start with scanning theory, describe the monochrome video signal, the NTSC color video signal, color encoding techniques, signal measurement, and review all current video formats including D-1 and D-2 digital video and HDTV. Part II: Electronic Image Processing and Special Effects. This will present a general model of video image compositing, which is applicable to hardware or software based compositing. Part III: Contemporary Video Production and Post-Production Techniques. This will include video special effects hardware, combining CGI and video special effects, video compositing/layering, combining CGI with live action and other related topics. Part IV: Will present examples of video art and commercial production from around the world. ==Who Should Attend=== This course is designed for computer graphics professionals who anticipate having to use video technology, or who have been using video and wish to have a stronger technical background and better understanding of current techniques and work in the field. ==Recommended Background (Prerequisites)=== The course material is of moderate difficulty due to the level of detail that will be covered. Some familiarity with computer animation techniques is assumed. ==Course Objectives=== This course has the following objectives: 1) To give attendees a rigorous technical overview of video theory, so that they can grasp the underlying principles of why video works the way it does; 2) to give attendees a complete overview of video production and post-production techniques so that they can make use of these in their own computer animation; and 3) to expose attendees to video art and commercial production so that they will be inspired and see how the techniques discussed in the other parts of the course apply. ==Chair Biography=== Dean Winkler is vice president and director of creative services at Post Perfect Inc., an electronic special effects facility in New York. Winkler is an internationally recognized computer/video artist. He holds a U.S. patent and has received numerous awards in the television industry. He lectures frequently both nationally and internationally.
