I stopped using LEDs because in those days that I experimented with it these LEDs did did give enough light. I am using a plain lamp which is normally used in torches. I use the ones rated '2.5 Volt', which are normally found in torches that have just one 1.5 Volt battery. Then I feed the flasher circuit with 6 Volts!!! (4 pieces type AA battery in series). The lamp lights up *very* brightly (as you can imagine), but it doesn't burn, because the time it is switched on is too short to develop the heat to make it burn. If you switch up the frequency, it will burn later on. I have tuned my flashers to make the bulb light up as brightly as possible, but that it will survive just an evening. Experimenting will cost a couple of bulbs, but they are very cheap when you buy a package at a time. Together with a reflector that I removed from my son's torch I have the brightest light effect, even brighter than guys who use (expensive and heavy) Xenon flashers.
